The Whole Kitchen Video Series: Part 1, The Refrigerator

I thought it might be helpful to give you a big picture of eating a mostly whole foods diet.  After many, many years I have come full circle to the understanding that for our family it is best to have an “80/20” rule.  In reality, we probably end up eating more like 90/10, but in any case, the point is that we eat a whole foods diet most of the time.  I believe that striving for perfection is not only unrealistic, but it sets you up for potential failure and disappointment.  This works for us, and hopefully his short video will give you an idea of the types of foods I buy on a weekly basis.

Keep in mind that we eat a mostly plant-based diet with some dairy cheese and eggs, so you won’t see any meat in our refrigerator.  This is one of the many ways your fridge might differ from mine!  I am only giving you a snapshot of our foods.  I will do separate posts on my cabinets and pantry.  I have numerous dried beans and grains that I use on a daily basis in the pantry, but that is for another day!

    I enjoyed seeing what you have in your fridge, I’m such a nosy parker 🙂 My fridge would look a bit of a state compared to yours, most embarasingly I have miso paste that’s supposed to be completely out of date but sitll looks and tastes fine (and I’m still using it!) Loads of vegetables -they rather fill it up being bulky items. A bit in the way of leftovers (lentil ragu, mung soup.) A block of cheddar for himself, some soya milk, and some soya margarine.

    I recently tried the Almond Breeze unsweetened almond milk that you have there, and I thought it was amazing, very close to fresh semi-skimmed cows milk – I will try to get it for cooking savoury dishes.

    I tend to keep my meat-subs in the freezer, but as a mainly wholefood person I do like veggie hot dogs and mince sometimes (they seem usually to be some kind of combo of soya and wheat protein/) They make fast and tasty meals and even if they’re not wholefood exactly, they are still considerably more wholesome than the highly processed meat-product type alternative, so I think that’s all worth taking into consideration.
