Enter starfruit: refreshing, quick and wholesome snack! One of my husband’s patients gave him a huge amount of starfruit. We have eaten this fruit before when given to us by others, but I have never purchased it. After a little research, I realized how easy this fruit is to prepare to eat, and I was very excited! Carambola, also known as starfruit, is the fruit of Averrhoa carambola, a species of tree native to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The starfruit can sit on the counter to ripen. It is ready when it is mostly yellow with some green and brownish edges.
How to prepare the starfruit to eat:
- Wash thoroughly
- Cut off both ends
- Trim 5 brownish edges (optional – I think it makes it nicer to look at when eating)
- Slice and enjoy!
